Types of Diapers
Pocket Diaper ~ A diaper with an opening to put an absorbent insert into. The outer layer of the diaper is usually made of PUL and the inner layer is usually microfleece.
AIO (All In One) ~ A diaper that you don’t need a cover or an insert for, it has everything it needs. The inside is usually hemp, bamboo or cotton.
Prefold ~ These are your old school but very trustworthy diapers that you can fold in different ways to change where the absorbancy or the fit for your baby – cost effective and easier to use then they look. Usually made of cotton, you also need a cover for this diaper.
Fitted ~ A fitted diaper is completely absorbent but you will need to have a cover to put over it. Fitted diapers are usually made of cotton or bamboo.
Inserts, Doublers & Liners
Insert ~ An absorbent, structured inner usually made of hemp or microfiber and goes inside a pocket diaper.
Doubler ~ An extra layer of material made to boost absorbancy of your diaper – it is usually thinner then an insert and made of bamboo or hemp.
Liner ~ A liner is to protect either the baby or the diaper. All liners can help keep diapers less messy from poops and easier to walk them over to the toilet to shake the mess into. Then, only your liner has stains and not your diaper. They can also protect your diaper from creams and ointments for rashes so that your diapers don’t absorb them and start to repel. If your liner is a stay dry liner and made from a thicker material such as fleece then it can also wick away moisture from your baby.
Diaper Materials 101
PUL ~ Polyurethane Laminate – A highly water proof fabric that is bonded to another fabric to create a waterproof outer coating for your diaper or wetbag.
Minky ~ A super soft outer layer for some diapers that remind me of velour from when I was young! Irresistably soft!
Bamboo ~ A super absorbent material (much more then cotton) that also has antibacterial properties, is grown with little or no pesticides and is a renewable resource therefore great for the environment.
Hemp ~ An extremely super absorbent material (more then cotton and bamboo) and also has antibacterial properties, is grown with little or no pesticides and is a renewable resource and great for the environment.
Microfiber ~ A synthetic material that is highly absorbent and used for inserts in diapers.
Microfleece ~ A protective, soft layer of material used as a barrier between babies skin and inserts to keep the baby’s skin dry and comfy.
